A multi-faceted creative spirit, Roti Brown helms a digital destination that celebrates the intersection of art and fashion, inspires followers with videos sharing her cooking and entertaining expertise, and oversees creative direction for the beauty brand, Being Frenshe. Here, we discuss how she maintains her inspiration and the experiences that continue to shape her today.
A.L.C.: What’s the most surprising thing you do to get into a creative mindset?
Roti: I used to scroll endlessly to feel creative but now I prefer to put my phone down, sit outdoors in a quiet place and settle into a creative mindset peacefully.
A.L.C.: What was the moment you were most proud of as a creator?
Roti: As a digital content creator and creative director of Being Frenshe, I love the fact that my work is two-sided. Half of the time I'm in front of the camera and the other half I put together creative concepts behind the camera. It’s a good duality for me and I’m proud to be able to do both.
A.L.C.: Can you share an experience that challenged you as a creator and how you navigated it?
Roti: A few years ago I went through my most severe round of burnout. In some ways burnout feels like a right of passage. In the creative space people are always talking about it and giving tips on how to navigate it. My experience felt like an endless cycle that I couldn’t get out of for about three months. In the end I had to come back to my roots and focus on the things I love in order to be excited about getting creative again. Now the burnout comes in shorter waves and is easier for me to find my way out of.
A.L.C.: What does having a platform mean to you and what is the most important message you would like your community to take away from your work?
Roti: I hope people can come to my space to find joy. I believe food should make us feel good, and as a creator whose platform is dedicated to food, I hope that translates through the content I share. Some of my warmest memories are around the dinner table with family and friends. When people watch any of my videos, my main goal is that they can leave with a little sliver of the feeling I have when I host, cook and eat with the people I care most about.
